Hispanic Impact 2009

What is Hispanic Impact?

The purpose of the Ohio Hispanic Impact Campaign is to offer facts, figures, information, and profiles which detail the positive contributions of Hispanic Ohioans year-round, and not just during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Please join us as we celebrate the unsung heroes and many points of light across Ohio who, along with their counterparts from other communities, truly help create a better Ohio for all.

Our fourth profile is from Cincinnati:  Su Casa

Su casa

Su Casa lit with perpetual hope for immigrants in Cincinnati

In 1997, concerned parishioners of Saint Charles of Borromeo Church heard a calling to help the waves of new immigrants arriving in Cincinnati to find the resources and information they needed to become successful in their new life in the United States. They decided to give them more than a nonprofit and gave them Su Casa (translated their home.)

More than 10 years later, Su Casa continues to keep the door wide open and facilitate the transition of Latinos and immigrants into their American life.

Latinos come to Su Casa in search of answers. Providing services to a monthly average of 150 individuals or families, the staff of Su Casa is keenly aware of the type of questions that show up daily at their doorstep: There will be victims of domestic violence looking for a shelter and someone that can relate to their plight, hungry families, pregnant women who need a doctor, parents looking for a way to get that needed prescription for their children, workers looking for employment, people who will bring their junk mail in English to be read to them thinking it may be ‘important’ news, desperate workers with immigration issues, individuals dealing with mental health dramas, some will even come with their suitcases mistakenly thinking the organization is a shelter. They are all welcome at Su Casa.

“This is the first place Latinos come for help and support, especially Latinos who recently immigrated to the United States. Su Casa is a very important organization in our city and to the immigrant community. Latinos who come to Su Casa can feel they are being listened to and that they will find guidance and kindness here. By the same token, the local corporations support Su Casa because they understand the value this organization brings to our community,” says Lorena Mora-Mowry Escape Latino reporter and editor of Mujer Latina blog.

Ohio Latino Demographics

Ohio's Latino community is growing rapidly.  In the past decade, Latinos in Ohio have increased by nearly 30%, which is helping to offset the population losses of whites, whose population decreased by 24,000 residents between 2000 and 2007.

To understand the impact of and status of Latinos in Ohio, please view our new "Ohio Latino Demographics" webpage.
